Course Summary

The journey through the criminal justice system is challenging for everyone who must go through it, but especially for those who are also experiencing mental health and substance use disorders. This training introduces behavioral health professionals to the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM). This strategic framework identifies key points in the criminal justice process where individuals with mental health and substance use disorders can be diverted to treatment and support. We will explore the challenges that justice-involved individuals face in the criminal justice system, along with best practices for overcoming these obstacles.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize the opportunities for diversion at each intercept in the Sequential Intercept Model.
  2. Identify the challenges that can surface at each intercept in the Sequential Intercept Model.
  3. Identify the best practices for diversion to treatment across the Sequential Intercept Model.


Learning Audience

The learners for this training are behavioral health service providers, social workers, counselors, peer support specialists, and other professionals who support individuals with substance use and behavioral health conditions.


Continuing Education Credits

This course is eligible for Continued Education Units (CEU) upon completion, which are awarded as follows: 

  • 1 CE credit awarded per (1) hour of completed learning
