Improving Interactions with Priority Populations in the Criminal Justice System

Course Summary

Individuals who navigate the criminal justice system encounter a range of hardships and challenges. However, some individuals face more challenges than others due to other factors. For this training, these priority populations include LGBTQ+ individuals, aging individuals, neurodivergent individuals, individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and women. This training will increase awareness of the unique needs of these priority populations within the criminal justice system and provide strategies for developing rapport and reducing harm.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Select strategies for building rapport with members of priority populations
    a. Reflect on personal biases that may impact your interactions with priority populations
    b. Recognize the challenges that priority populations face while navigating the justice system
    c. Recognize how stigmatizing language can cause harm
    d. Identify how your role in the criminal justice system can integrate a trauma-informed approach when working with members of priority populations

This course is designed for crisis responders, first responders, attorneys, judges, parole/probation officers, jail custody staff, jail administrators, and others who work with individuals who are navigating the justice system.
