Affirming Care and Resilience for 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth

Course Summary

Our course aims to provide foundational knowledge, contextual understanding, and data-driven insights to support the wellbeing of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Participants will explore affirming care, understand barriers, and engage in discussions about hopes, dreams, and resilience. By envisioning a positive future, we strive to empower young people to embrace their identities and build a life filled with purpose and fulfillment; and strive to support mental health providers in working alongside youth toward that vision.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize the consequences faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ young individuals who lack essential social support during their developmental stages and the mental health and wellbeing impact of adverse experiences resulting from victimization and stigmatization.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to facilitate open dialogues, enabling 2SLGBTQIA+  youth to feel empowered, confident, and equipped to navigate their personal care while also fostering support from family and other social networks.
  3. Implement supportive practices, affirmations, and care strategies for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth clients within the context of their families, considering the challenges posed by navigating social systems, the political climate, and other contributing factors affecting mental health and overall wellbeing.


Learning Audience

The learners for this training are behavioral health service providers, social workers, counselors, peer support specialists, and other professionals who support individuals with substance use and behavioral health conditions.


Continuing Education Credits

This course is eligible for Continued Education Units (CEU) upon completion, which are awarded as follows: 

  • 1 CEU credit awarded per (1) hour of completed learning

The University of Colorado is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The University of Colorado maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
