Race and Behavioral Health: Indigenous Americans

Course Summary

This course explores behavioral health within the context of Native American culture. You will gain an understanding of the unique mental health challenges faced by Indigenous communities.


Topics covered will include historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, substance abuse, suicide, and the impact of colonialism on mental health. You will also examine the importance of cultural identity, spirituality, and community in promoting resilience and well-being among Indigenous peoples.


By the end of the course, you will have a deeper appreciation for the cultural richness and diversity of American Indian & Alaska Native (AIAN) communities and a greater awareness of the need for culturally responsive mental health care.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify historical events contributing to AIAN health inequities today.
  • Integrate your knowledge of AIAN health disparities when caring for clients.
  • Demonstrate strategies for culturally appropriate clinical care interactions.


Learning Audience

The learners for this training are behavioral health service providers, social workers, counselors, peer support specialists, and other professionals who support individuals with substance use and behavioral health conditions.


American Psychological Association Continuing Education (APA CE) Credits

This course is eligible for Continued Education Units (CEU) upon completion, which are awarded as follows: 

  • 1 APA CEU credit awarded per (1) hour of completed learning
