Course Summary

Stigma poses a major barrier to patients in seeking treatment for mental health concerns and in their recovery from mental health symptoms. Addressing stigma is a vital step in mental health. Stigma manifests differently in various populations, with unique considerations for addressing stigma across diverse groups. This course breaks down types of stigma, the impact of stigma, considerations for addressing stigma in different groups, and actionable strategies that behavioral health providers can take to address stigma.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of stigma and the impact of stigma on individuals, families and recovery.
  2. Identify how stigma differs among diverse populations.
  3. Identify ways in which behavioral health providers can reduce stigma.  


Learning Audience

The learners for this training are behavioral health service providers, social workers, counselors, peer support specialists, and other professionals who support individuals with substance use and behavioral health conditions.
