Course Summary
Participants will identify and apply strategies to reduce stigma, increase help-seeking behaviors, and recognize stressors unique to rural workforce populations, particularly among Spanish-speaking migrant and seasonal workers, agricultural workers, ranchers, and first responders.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe cultural values and contextual factors influencing help-seeking among key rural subpopulations
- Identify behavioral, occupational, and environmental stressors affecting health and mental well-being in rural workforces
- Identify three types of stigma
- Recognize how stigma and cultural norms affect attitudes toward mental health treatment
- Apply communication and engagement strategies to encourage help-seeking in culturally responsive ways
- Connect patients with:
- Local, regional, or telehealth resources for behavioral health support
- Natural supports, including the pastoral counseling community, nontraditional resources (such as cultural and Indigenous healers, wellness coaches, and veterans groups).
Learning Audience
Primarily intended for registered nurses practicing in rural and frontier settings; also appropriate for other healthcare professionals including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners; physical therapists and occupational therapists; licensed professional counselors, clinical social workers, and marriage and family therapists; addiction counselors and peer support specialists.
Continuing Education Credits
This course is eligible for Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) credit upon completion, which are awarded as follows:
- 1 NCPD credit awarded per (1) hour of completed learning
