Course Summary

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria is the most widely used and comprehensive set of standards for level of care recommendations, continued service, and care transitions for individuals with addiction and co-occurring conditions. This course is designed to equip participants with a well-rounded understanding of the ASAM criteria model, encompassing its historical context, evidence-based effectiveness, practical implementation, and insights from experienced practitioners.  This course is based on the 3rd edition of the ASAM criteria. Colorado is required to implement the 4th edition by 2026.


Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and analyze peer-reviewed research studies regarding the utility of the ASAM criteria model in guiding addiction treatment interventions.
  2. Demonstrate practical skills for the application of the ASAM criteria model during client intake processes, including comprehensive assessment, dimensional evaluation, and level of care determination.
  3. Evaluate case studies from experienced providers in order to build confidence in the application of the ASAM model when diagnosing and recommending treatment options for clients.
